21, 2021. Martinez was taken into custody without incident by the Hereford Police Department in Deaf Smith County, approximately 50 miles southwest of Amarillo. He was found staying at a hotel under a woman's name and immediately identified himself as the suspect when approached by officers.
According to the affidavit, the incident began with a physical altercation at El Mitote Sports Lounge in Midland, where Martinez and the victims were present. After the fight, the group left the lounge and headed to the victim's home, where Martinez, who had been living there for about four months, approached them with a rifle and opened fire. The affidavit details that Tapia-Lopez's girlfriend was saved when he pushed her to the ground, shielding her from the gunfire.
Martinez was charged with three counts of capital murder and is currently held on a $3 million bond. He is expected to be extradited back to Midland for trial. The case has drawn significant attention, and authorities are hopeful that justice will be served for the victims and their families.
