On December 9, 2021, Marco Matthew Gonzales, a 38-year-old male from Frankston, Texas, tragically lost his life due to multiple gunshot wounds. The incident occurred during an early morning hostage situation and hours-long standoff at a residence near County Road 309. Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots, prompting law enforcement to respond to the scene.
Upon arrival, they discovered Gonzales deceased on the front porch of the residence.
The alleged shooter, identified as 38-year-old Robert Mason Eckert from Athens, Texas, was found inside the residence holding other occupants against their will. After a tense negotiation, deputies were able to communicate with Eckert and safely release the hostages. Eckert was subsequently arrested on a murder warrant and taken into custody. Sheriff Flores stated that the incident appeared to be an isolated event and that the shooter and victim knew each other, though the exact nature of their relationship was not immediately clear.
Following the incident, Eckert was indicted on charges of capital murder, aggravated kidnapping with a deadly weapon, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. On June 7, 2024, Eckert was sentenced to 60 years in state prison for the murder of Gonzales and an additional 25 years for the related kidnapping and assault charges. The sentences were to run concurrently, with a 912-day jail credit for time already served.
