Jose Canales, a 57-year-old Hispanic male, tragically lost his life on February 11, 2022, in Houston, Texas. Canales was a dedicated truck driver, known for his hard work and commitment to his job. On the night of his death, he was performing his duties as a parking lot sweeper in the 19500 block of Tomball Parkway. Canales had just cashed a $70 check and was in the process of picking up debris when he was confronted by two men in a silver SUV.
The confrontation quickly escalated, and Canales was shot once, with the bullet passing through his arm and penetrating his chest. Despite his efforts to return to his truck, Canales was unable to call for help as his phone had been stolen by the assailants. He was found dead by a witness hours later.
The investigation into Canales's death led to the arrest of Ethan Caleb Thomas, a 22-year-old male from Houston. Surveillance footage and cellphone records played a crucial role in identifying Thomas as the perpetrator. Thomas, along with an unidentified accomplice, had followed Canales from a nearby check-cashing store to the parking lot where the crime occurred. The motive for the murder was robbery, as the assailants sought to steal Canales's belongings, including his phone and the cash he had just received.
Thomas was charged with capital murder and later accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to murder in exchange for a life sentence. As part of the plea agreement, Thomas waived his right to appeal and will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years. The Harris County Sheriff's Office continues to pursue leads to apprehend the second suspect involved in the crime. The case highlights the senseless violence that claimed the life of a hardworking member of the community, leaving a lasting impact on Canales's family and friends.
