On May 17, 2022, 19-year-old Mareon Robertson was fatally shot outside an Arlington, Texas motel. The incident occurred around 6:05 p.m. when Robertson exited the backseat of a vehicle and was approached by 18-year-old Toby Garcia, who shot him as he attempted to flee. Robertson succumbed to his injuries later that evening.
Following the shooting, Arlington Police Department launched an investigation and issued an arrest warrant for Toby Garcia.
On May 18, 2022, Garcia, along with 17-year-old Joseph Garcia and 45-year-old James Capps, was found hiding in a drainage ditch and taken into custody without incident. Detectives believe the trio intended to rob Robertson and that Garcia shot him during the attempted robbery.
All three suspects were charged with capital murder and evading arrest. Toby Garcia's murder charge was later upgraded to capital murder upon case filing. The suspects allegedly bragged about their involvement in Robertson's death to neighbors, which led to their arrest.
The Arlington Police Department's Homicide, Fugitive, SWAT, Gang, Violent Crime, and Aviation Units, along with the Community Action Team and Patrol officers, worked together to identify and apprehend the suspects. Chief of Police Al Jones praised the team effort that led to the swift arrests.
The case remains under investigation, and the suspects are awaiting trial. The tragic death of Mareon Robertson has left a lasting impact on the community, and the efforts to bring justice for him continue.
