Marisela Castro, a 39-year-old transgender woman, was tragically killed in Houston, Texas, on July 29, 2022. She was shot in the back while walking down Centerwood Street in the Northshore neighborhood. Castro was in a car with two other people when the shooting occurred. The car was later found abandoned at a nearby jogging trail.
The investigation into Castro's death led to the arrest of a 17-year-old suspect. However, the suspect was not believed to have pulled the trigger.
Surveillance footage helped the Houston Police Department identify another suspect, who remained at large. The case highlighted the ongoing violence and discrimination faced by transgender individuals, particularly transgender women of color.
In May 2024, Oscar Ariel Sierra, a 19-year-old, pleaded guilty to the murder of Marisela Castro. Sierra admitted to luring Castro to a meeting with the intention of robbing her. He fatally shot her in the back of the head and fled the scene in her car. Sierra was sentenced to life in prison for his actions.
The case drew attention to the need for greater protection and support for transgender individuals, as well as the importance of addressing hate crimes and violence against the LGBTQ+ community.
