On the evening of August 10, 2016, tragedy struck in Kansas City, Missouri, when 28-year-old Craig S. Dydell was found fatally wounded in a residential neighborhood. Officers were dispatched to the 4000 block of Olive Street shortly before 7:00 p.m. regarding a reported shooting. Upon arrival, first responders discovered Dydell lying in a grassy area near the sidewalk, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response of emergency personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene, marking the city’s 65th homicide of that year.
Craig Dydell was a father to a one-year-old daughter and a twin brother who had spent much of his life in Kansas City. He had attended Van Horn High School before transferring to Central High School, where he graduated in 2006. At the time of his death, he was pursuing a career in music as an aspiring rapper and member of the local group Bad Habits, which he had formed with his brothers and friends. Known to loved ones by nicknames such as 'Nu Nu' and 'Noodles,' he had studied art at Metropolitan Community College-Penn Valley and was described by his family as a fun-loving individual who was trying to branch out on his own creatively.
In the months following the shooting, the investigation into Dydell's death appeared to yield few leads. By the end of 2016, the case remained unsolved with no suspects in custody. His mother, Jessica Dydell, publicly pleaded for information, expressing her grief and frustration over the 'code of silence' that often hinders homicide investigations. She urged anyone who witnessed the events on Olive Street to come forward, emphasizing the devastating ripple effect the violence had on her family. Despite these appeals, public records from the time indicated that no arrests had been made in connection with the fatal shooting.
