Shereena Ann Byington Webster, a 36-year-old Caucasian woman from Amarillo, Texas, tragically lost her life on August 18, 2022. She was a beloved teacher and mother to a young daughter. Shereena was known for her dedication to education and her warm, caring personality. She had a long career in teaching, impacting many students' lives throughout her tenure at Oakdale Elementary and South Georgia Elementary.
At the time of her death, she had recently taken on a new role as the High Impact Tutoring Learning Leader for Region 16.
The investigation into Shereena's death revealed that her ex-boyfriend, Erik Mitchell Rivas, was responsible for the crime. Rivas broke into Shereena's home early in the morning of August 18, 2022, and shot her multiple times. Shereena's 5-year-old daughter discovered her mother's body and immediately alerted her grandmother, who then called the police. Rivas was quickly identified as a suspect and was arrested the following day near Dallas.
The case went to trial, and in April 2024, a Randall County jury found Erik Rivas guilty of capital murder. The evidence presented at the trial included data from Shereena's home security system, which showed Rivas breaking in through the back door. The prosecution highlighted that Shereena suffered eight gunshot wounds and three lacerations to the back of her head while trying to defend herself. Rivas was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

They have held events to honor her memory, including a balloon release on what would have been her 38th birthday.
