On December 12, 2022, Enrique Lopez Estrada, a 26-year-old man from Taylor, Texas, was found unresponsive in the yard of a home in the 1400 block of Jones Street. When paramedics arrived, they attempted to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at 8:01 p.m. An autopsy revealed that Estrada suffered a single, fatal wound from a .22-caliber bullet. The bullet entered his back under the shoulder and hit vital organs, including the heart, leading to his immediate death.
The investigation
initially labeled Estrada's death as suspicious, but it was later ruled a homicide. Police Chief Henry Fluck stated that Estrada had been assaulted twice before being shot while on the ground. Witnesses reported that Estrada had fallen and passed out after the altercation. The victim and the attacker were known to each other, and the incident was not a random act of violence.
A suspect, 19-year-old Esmeralda Renee Alderete, was identified and charged with murder in connection with Estrada's death. An arrest warrant was issued for Alderete, who was considered armed and dangerous. She was arrested on December 21, 2022, and is awaiting proceedings at the Williamson County Jail.
The Taylor Police Department continues to work with the Williamson County District Attorney's office on the case. The community was assured that there was no broader threat, as the incident was an isolated altercation between acquaintances.
