Detective Joseph A. Perkins, aged 78, was a dedicated officer with the Memphis Police Department. On July 15, 1900, he was fatally wounded while attempting to arrest a murder suspect. The incident occurred on McLemore Avenue near Cummings Street, where Detective Perkins and his partner went to apprehend the suspect who was hiding in a room.
