Deputy Sheriff John Lamb, aged 35, was shot and killed on August 2, 1900, in Sneedville, Tennessee. He was attempting to arrest a man during a disturbance related to elections when the suspect drew a gun and opened fire, fatally wounding Deputy Lamb. The suspect was also killed in the ensuing gun battle involving several other citizens. Deputy Lamb was survived by his wife, four sons, father, and two brothers.
