Deputy Sheriff Alex Gary Morris, Sr., aged 47, was fatally shot on April 22, 1961, in Sneedville, Tennessee. Morris and his colleague, Deputy Alonzo Tyler, were attempting to arrest a county constable for drinking and driving. The constable led the deputies on a pursuit that ended at his home. Upon arrival, seven members of the constable's family opened fire on the deputies, killing both Morris and Tyler. The constable they were chasing was also killed in the ensuing gunfire.
