Deputy Sheriff Edward N. Griffitts, aged 25, was shot and killed on September 26, 1903, in Unitia, Tennessee. Griffitts and another deputy were attempting to arrest a man on a warrant for lewdness. When they arrived at a barn in Unitia, they found the suspect and a woman on the second level. Deputy Griffitts informed the suspect of his arrest, but the suspect drew a large-caliber handgun and opened fire.
