Deputy Sheriff Herbert H. Slayton, aged 65, of the Giles County Sheriff's Department in Tennessee, tragically lost his life on January 24, 1978. He was shot and killed while checking on a vehicle. The suspect, an AWOL soldier from the US Army, had set up an ambush and shot Deputy Slayton with a handgun at close range, striking him five times—once in the chest and four times in the back.
