In the late summer of 1983, the community of Mountain City, Tennessee, was shaken by the tragic death of 24-year-old Auxiliary Deputy Ronnal Ralph Stanley. On the evening of August 31st, what began as a response to a hit-and-run accident in nearby Butler would end in a fatal confrontation that cut short the life of the young law enforcement officer who had served with the Johnson County Sheriff's Department for nine months.
Responding to the scene on Highway 67, Deputy Stanley and his fellow officers encountered a situation that quickly escalated. While attempting to arrest a man on suspicion of drunk driving, a scuffle broke out, and one of the individuals fled into the nearby woods. Stanley, who was filling in for a deputy attending training, gave chase and eventually caught up with the fleeing man. A struggle ensued, during which the suspect managed to gain control of Stanley's service weapon.
In the dense Tennessee woods, the confrontation turned deadly as the suspect fired the weapon, mortally wounding Deputy Stanley. The loss of the young auxiliary deputy, a man survived by his wife and three daughters, sent ripples of grief through his family and the local law enforcement community.
In the aftermath of the shooting, an 18-year-old suspect was apprehended. The ensuing legal proceedings found the young man responsible for the death of Deputy Stanley. Convicted of second-degree murder, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in the fatal struggle. He was eventually paroled in 2004.
