In the early morning hours of December 11, 1991, a tragic series of events unfolded in Mountain City, Tennessee, culminating in the death of 28-year-old Deputy Sheriff Allen Richard Lipford. A dedicated officer with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office for eight years, Lipford was fatally shot by an escaped felon. The suspect, a 24-year-old man, had managed to overpower two deputies and seize one of their service revolvers to facilitate his escape from the county jail.
As the inmate fled
the facility around 3:15 a.m., he encountered another deputy in the parking lot. A struggle ensued, during which the escapee disarmed the deputy. At this moment, Deputy Lipford was arriving and exiting his patrol car to provide assistance. The suspect then opened fire, striking Lipford in the head. After the shooting, the assailant stole Deputy Lipford's patrol car and fled the scene. The wounded deputy was rushed to a hospital in Boone, North Carolina, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The following day, law enforcement located the suspect hiding under a pile of leaves in Shady Valley. He was taken into custody and subsequently faced legal proceedings for his actions. The man was convicted of murder and received a life sentence in prison for the death of Deputy Lipford. In 1993, an additional 25 years were added to his sentence for a range of other crimes, including theft and armed robbery.
Deputy Lipford was survived by his wife and a two-year-old daughter. In a lasting tribute to his service and sacrifice, the Deputy Sheriff Allen R. Lipford Memorial Bridge was named in his honor on July 6, 2021. The man responsible for his death has faced parole hearings, with one noted to have occurred in November 2022.
