In the quiet, rural landscape of Greene County, Tennessee, a dedicated public servant's life was tragically cut short in the line of duty. Sergeant Ricky Dale Coyle, a 41-year-old White male, was a respected officer with the Greene County Sheriff's Department. On September 25, 1995, he was investigating a seemingly routine hit-and-run accident on Stagecoach Road in Greeneville. The situation, however, would soon escalate into a fatal confrontation.
While conducting his investigation in this remote part of the county, Sergeant Coyle encountered a man who would ultimately be responsible for his death. In a sudden and violent exchange, both men drew their weapons. Sergeant Coyle was struck by three bullets. One round was stopped by his protective vest, but another penetrated below it, and a third entered his side, causing a fatal injury to his spleen. Despite being gravely wounded, he was able to radio for assistance, calmly stating that he needed an ambulance.
Responding to the call, an off-duty officer was the first to arrive at the desolate scene. He found Sergeant Coyle slumped over the steering wheel of his patrol car. A short distance away, approximately 30 yards from the sergeant's vehicle, lay the body of the man he had been investigating. The suspect had sustained five gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. The subsequent investigation revealed that the two men had been standing in close proximity to one another when the exchange of gunfire erupted.
Further investigation into the suspect's background uncovered that he was a fugitive from Alabama. He was wanted on charges of arson and other felonies. With the suspect deceased at the scene, there were no arrests or trials in connection with the murder of Sergeant Ricky Dale Coyle. A U.S. Air Force veteran, Sergeant Coyle had served the Greene County Sheriff's Department for 16 years, leaving behind a legacy of dedicated service.
