An eighth-grade student at East Lake Academy, Deontrey was actively involved in his school's football team and was a member of The Refuge Church. He also participated in the Gear Up and Goodwill Youth Mentoring Program.
His death sent shockwaves through his community, leaving his family and friends to grapple with a senseless loss.
The shooting was a result of ongoing gang violence, a tragic case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Investigators and neighbors believe that Deontrey was not the intended target of the gunfire that erupted at his residence. The bullets that pierced through his home were meant for someone else, a grim testament to the escalating tensions between rival gangs, identified as the Athens Park Bloods and the Bounty Hunter Bloods. Police reports indicated that the suspected shooter was targeting Deontrey's mother's boyfriend, who was associated with the Bounty Hunter Bloods. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Deontrey's mother found him wounded inside their home. He tragically succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.
For a period, no suspects were publicly identified, and no arrests were made directly in connection with Deontrey's murder. In the days following the incident, Chattanooga police, fearing retaliatory violence, brought in several individuals for questioning on unrelated charges. Among them was Deontrey's uncle, who was arrested on an outstanding warrant and for being a felon in possession of ammunition. Two other men were also taken into custody on drug possession charges. However, a significant development in the investigation came to light through later legal proceedings. A grand jury indictment filed in Hamilton County, Tennessee, formally accused Cortez Sims of the unlawful, intentional, and premeditated killing of Deontrey Southers. The indictment alleges that on or about January 20, 2014, Cortez Sims, also known as 'Awax,' was responsible for the murder of the 13-year-old. The court documents connect Sims to the Athens Park Bloods and detail his involvement in a criminal enterprise that included acts of violence to further its objectives. This breakthrough offered a measure of hope for justice for Deontrey and his grieving family, though the pain of his untimely death remains.
