In the early morning hours of July 13, 2014, the life of 19-year-old Octavio Delrico Dean, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Memphis, Tennessee. The incident unfolded at the Alden's Gate Condominiums, where police responded to a call and discovered Dean with a fatal gunshot wound to his head. The initial account of the event was provided by 20-year-old Jeremey Coleman, who was present at the scene.
Coleman initially claimed to authorities that Dean had taken his own life.
However, as investigators delved deeper into the circumstances surrounding Dean's death, inconsistencies in Coleman's story began to emerge. Coleman later admitted to cleaning the gun and disposing of it after the shooting. This admission, coupled with other evidence gathered during the investigation, led law enforcement to believe that his initial report of suicide was false and intentionally misleading. The investigators concluded that Dean had not shot himself.
As a result of the investigation, the narrative shifted from a potential suicide to a homicide. Jeremey Coleman was subsequently identified as a suspect in the death of Octavio Delrico Dean. A grand jury indicted Coleman on charges of reckless homicide for his role in the fatal shooting. He also faced an additional charge of tampering with evidence due to his admitted actions of cleaning and disposing of the weapon. Following the indictment, Coleman was arrested by authorities. He was later released from custody after posting a $75,000 bond.
