In the Orange Mound area of Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 25-year-old Michael Battle was tragically cut short on the evening of March 20, 2018. The young man was outside an apartment complex when he was fatally shot during what authorities later described as a robbery gone wrong. After being shot, Battle managed to run to a nearby home on Spottswood Avenue seeking help, where he ultimately collapsed on the porch and succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the senseless killing led Memphis police to three suspects. Authorities arrested Nathaniel Campbell, who was 19 at the time, and Chrishun Carter, then 20. A third suspect, Kendall Everheart, was also taken into custody. Investigators believe that Campbell orchestrated the robbery, informing his co-conspirators that Battle was expected to be carrying a significant amount of cash. Carter and Everheart are alleged to have been the ones who carried out the robbery.
According to police reports, a struggle ensued during the course of the robbery, which resulted in Michael Battle being shot. Witnesses reported seeing four men fleeing the scene in a gold Nissan Altima after the shooting. All three identified suspects were subsequently charged with first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery, and two counts of attempted especially aggravated robbery. The case against the three men proceeded through the legal system as prosecutors sought justice for the death of Michael Battle.
