In the summer of 2014, a domestic disturbance in a Memphis, Tennessee, home escalated into a tragedy that claimed the lives of a father and two of his children. On August 15, 24-year-old Gustavo Gomez was fatally shot by his father, Abel Gomez. The violent encounter also resulted in the death of Gustavo's younger sister, Lupita, who was five or six years old and used a wheelchair.
The events unfolded when police were called to the family's residence in the 400 block of Chinaberry for a
domestic dispute between Abel Gomez and his wife. As officers arrived, Abel Gomez fired shots at them before they could enter the home. Once inside, authorities discovered the bodies of Gustavo and Lupita. Their father was also found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
An 11-year-old son and the children's mother managed to escape the house without physical harm. Abel Gomez was transported to the Regional Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. As Abel Gomez was the sole suspect in the deaths of his children, no arrests were made in the case.
