On the morning of May 19, 2015, Suman Preet Sarkaria, a 24-year-old woman, was inside a room at the Traveler’s Inn on West Elk Avenue in Elizabethton when a gunshot shattered the quiet. A person who had been in the room with her ran to the lobby and called 911, setting off an emergency response that converged on the motel around 7:50 a.m.
Police found her suffering from a gunshot wound and rushed her by ambulance to Johnson City Medical Center, fighting for time on the drive out of
town. Despite the effort, she later died at the hospital, leaving investigators to piece together what happened in those final moments inside the room.
From the start, authorities said the early picture pointed toward self-inflicted harm rather than an attack. As officers worked the scene and interviewed the witness, Elizabethton police stated they were initially treating the case as a suicide and that, at that stage, they had found no signs of foul play.
Public reporting from that day did not identify any suspects, announce any arrests, or describe criminal charges connected to her death. The incident was described as still under investigation, but the information released at the time remained limited beyond the witness account, the location, and the police view that there were no indications of a homicide.
