On the morning of May 19, 2015, Suman Preet Sarkaria, a 24-year-old woman, was inside a room at the Traveler’s Inn on West Elk Avenue in Elizabethton when a gunshot shattered the quiet. A person who had been in the room with her ran to the lobby and called 911, setting off an emergency response that converged on the motel around 7:50 a.m.

Police found her suffering from a gunshot wound and rushed her by ambulance to Johnson City Medical Center, fighting for time on the drive out of tow ...
