In the spring of 2016, the community of Huntingdon, Tennessee, was struck by the tragic and untimely death of 18-year-old Peyton Webb Gates. A white male, Peyton was discovered on April 30, 2016, inside an apartment at the Hunter Ridge Apartments with a gunshot wound to his head. A. 38 Smith & Wesson revolver was found lying next to him. Emergency services were called, and he was initially transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital.
Due to the severity of his injury, he was later transferred to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, where he was ultimately pronounced dead.
The Huntingdon Police Department, in conjunction with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting. The inquiry determined that the gunshot wound was self-inflicted and accidental in nature. This conclusion was later confirmed by an autopsy performed by the State Medical Examiner in Nashville. As a result of these findings, the case was closed, and no arrests were made in connection with the incident, with no suspects being sought by law enforcement.
Peyton Gates was remembered for his personality and patriotism. At the time of his death, he was employed as a floor technician at Baptist Memorial Hospital. He was an active member of the West Tennessee Car Club and was involved with the Westport Church of Christ. His sudden passing deeply affected his family, including his parents and brothers, as well as the wider community.
