On a summer night in Memphis, Tennessee, tragedy struck a 17-year-old male named KaVion Hopkins, forever altering the lives of those involved. On July 22, 2017, Hopkins was a passenger in a vehicle with several other individuals, a seemingly ordinary evening that would soon take a devastating turn. The events that unfolded near Hoskins Drive and Semmes Avenue would culminate in the untimely death of the teenager.
While inside the car, two other occupants, 19-year-old Marshawn Brakefield
and 17-year-old Kevin Young, who were seated in the back, made a fateful decision. Investigators reported that the pair attempted to rob Hopkins of his pistol. During the attempted robbery, a struggle ensued, and Hopkins was shot multiple times. After the shooting, Brakefield and Young took the firearm and fled from the vehicle. Hopkins was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. His passing was officially recorded on July 23, 2017.
