In the early morning hours of February 3, 2018, 19-year-old Devonte Taylor and his friend, 19-year-old Jereme Jones, were shot and killed in a deadly robbery. Later that morning, around 9:45 a.m., their bodies were discovered inside a car at Fletcher Creek Park in Cordova, a suburb of Memphis, Tennessee. Both young men had sustained multiple gunshot wounds from two different caliber weapons.
The investigation into the double homicide revealed a tragic tale of a planned robbery. Taylor and Jones had arranged to meet with several individuals under the pretense of selling two rifles. The meeting, however, was a setup orchestrated by members of the Piru Bloods gang who intended to rob the two teenagers of their firearms.
In the aftermath of the killings, law enforcement identified multiple suspects. Juanyai Walls was arrested and, in July 2022, a Criminal Court jury convicted him on two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of especially aggravated robbery for his role in the deaths of Taylor and Jones. He subsequently received two automatic life sentences for the murders.
Another man, Kentrell Spight, was also charged in connection with the murders. Spight ultimately pled guilty to his involvement and was sentenced to 35 years in prison without the possibility of parole. At the time of Walls' conviction, two other co-defendants were reportedly awaiting trial for their alleged roles in the slayings. The investigation determined that the motive behind the fatal encounter was the theft of the rifles that Devonte Taylor and Jereme Jones had intended to sell.
