Javarius Cole, a 24-year-old male, tragically lost his life on September 3, 2018, in a violent encounter in the Highland Heights neighborhood of Memphis, Tennessee. The incident unfolded during a dispute involving Cole and a relative of Koski Mathews.
During the altercation, Mathews brandished a firearm and shot Cole multiple times. In the immediate aftermath, an associate of Cole's reportedly returned fire, striking Mathews.
Despite his own injuries, Mathews was able to secure his weapon inside a nearby residence before he was transported to the hospital for medical attention.
While on his way to the hospital, Mathews allegedly made a spontaneous confession to the shooting, which was captured on a law enforcement officer's body camera. Following an investigation into the fatal shooting, the medical examiner determined that Javarius Cole's death was a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds. Subsequently, Koski Mathews was arrested and faced a charge of second-degree murder in connection with Cole's death.
