On the evening of July 20, 2017, the Kansas City Police Department received a dispatch call regarding a shooting incident in the area of 28th Street and Walrond Avenue. Upon arriving at the scene at approximately 5:35 p.m., officers located a victim suffering from gunshot trauma. The individual was identified as 25-year-old male Daveon C. Cooksey. Emergency medical services transported him to a local hospital for treatment, but he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival at 6:21 p.m.
