On the evening of April 8, 2020, a domestic dispute in Cleveland, Tennessee, escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 38-year-old Chris Wingard. A heated argument with another man, Matthew David Thomas, who was 29 at the time, turned violent. The altercation resulted in Wingard being shot multiple times in the chest on Clemmer Street NE. Emergency services responded to the scene, but Wingard succumbed to his injuries.
Following the shooting, Thomas fled the scene.
His attempt to escape came to an end when he crashed his vehicle on the exit 25 ramp of Interstate 75. Law enforcement officers who were responding to the initial incident were then able to apprehend him. The investigation that followed confirmed that the fatal shooting was the result of the domestic dispute between the two men.
Matthew David Thomas was taken into custody and initially charged with first-degree murder for the death of Chris Wingard. However, the case did not proceed to a full trial on this charge. Instead, a plea deal was reached in which Thomas pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree murder. This agreement resulted in a 15-year prison sentence.
The resolution of the case through a plea deal was a source of anguish for Wingard's family. They expressed their profound dissatisfaction with the outcome, believing that the evidence warranted a more severe penalty, such as a life sentence. Despite their desire for a trial and a harsher punishment for Thomas, the plea deal was finalized. Thomas is currently serving his sentence for his role in the fatal shooting.
