In the early hours of a cold January morning in Knoxville, Tennessee, the life of 25-year-old Jonah B. Caldwell, Jr. was tragically cut short. On January 18, 2021, Caldwell was fatally shot in a double homicide at the Mag Lounge on East Magnolia Avenue. Another young man, 23-year-old Marquis Nolan, was also killed in the shooting. Emergency services were called to the scene where one of the victims was found, and he was transported to UT Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The second victim arrived at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center by a private vehicle and also succumbed to his injuries.
Jonah, known to his friends and family as 'J.J.', was remembered as a graduate of Austin-East High School's class of 2013, where he had been a cornerback for the football team. He had also attended Pellissippi State Community College. Described as a fashionable dresser with a love for shoes, he had an outgoing personality and was known for being a jokester who could talk to anyone. He was a beloved son, brother, and grandson who would go to great lengths for the people he loved.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Knoxville Police Department launched a homicide investigation. Despite the presence of many people at the lounge on the night of the incident, no arrests have been made in the case. Investigators believe that a suspect in the shooting may be located in the Detroit, Michigan area and possibly travels between Detroit and Knoxville.
The families of both Jonah Caldwell and Marquis Nolan have been left to grieve the sudden and violent loss of their loved ones. Vigils have been held in their memory, with family and friends gathering to honor the two young men. The East Tennessee Valley Crime Stoppers has offered a cash reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of a suspect. The case remains an unsolved homicide, and the families continue to seek justice for Jonah and Marquis.
