In the summer of 2021, the life of 26-year-old Desheena LaCole Kyle was tragically cut short in Knoxville, Tennessee. A vibrant woman with dreams of starting her own business, her disappearance in June of that year sparked a months-long search that ended in heartbreak and a quest for justice. Her family and friends, holding onto hope, would later learn the devastating truth of her demise.
Desheena was last seen on June 19, 2021, and was officially reported missing on June 28.
For three agonizing months, her loved ones searched tirelessly, organizing community efforts and pleading for any information that might lead to her safe return. The investigation into her disappearance eventually led authorities to a grim discovery on September 28, 2021. Desheena's body was found concealed in a toolbox in the crawl space of an abandoned house on Sam Tillery Road, a property that once belonged to the great-grandmother of her boyfriend, John Bassett. The manner of her death was ruled a homicide.
Suspicion quickly fell upon John Bassett, who was already in custody on an unrelated probation violation since July 7. As the investigation unfolded, a dark narrative emerged. Prosecutors would later argue that Bassett had murdered his girlfriend and then went to great lengths to conceal his crime. He was indicted by a Knox County Grand Jury and faced charges of first-degree murder, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with evidence. During the trial, Bassett took the stand and presented a different version of events, claiming that Desheena had taken her own life and that he had panicked, leading him to hide her body.
The jury, however, was not swayed by his testimony. In May 2023, John Bassett was found guilty on all counts. For the murder of Desheena Kyle, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life behind bars. The verdict brought a measure of closure to Desheena’s grieving family, who remembered her as a funny, outgoing, and loving individual whose life was stolen far too soon.
