In the summer of 2014, Brenda Kaye Baker, a 51-year-old Caucasian woman, vanished from Knoxville, Tennessee. For nearly two years, her whereabouts remained a mystery. Then, on February 22, 2016, a grim discovery was made behind a business on Cooper Street, near West Fifth Avenue. A body, wrapped in sheets and placed in a bag, was found. The remains were in a state of decomposition, making immediate identification impossible.
Investigators determined that the woman had been the victim of a brutal beating, with the cause of death being severe blunt force trauma to the head. For years, she was a Jane Doe, her identity and the story of her final moments locked in silence. It wasn't until July 2021, after a lengthy investigation involving a reconstruction by the FBI, that the victim was finally identified as Brenda Kaye Baker.
Originally from Lima, Ohio, Brenda was a graduate of Perry High School and had received secretarial training. She had worked as a waitress and was a mother who had given her daughter up for adoption. Despite the identification, the circumstances surrounding her murder remain unsolved. As of late 2025, no arrests have been made in connection with her death, and authorities continue to seek information from the public that could lead to the person or persons responsible for her violent demise. Her case remains a haunting, unsolved homicide in the records of the Knoxville Police Department.
