In the early morning hours of June 22, 2021, the life of 20-year-old DeMya Gordon, a young mother from Memphis, Tennessee, was tragically cut short. At approximately 7:25 a.m., residents of a rooming house in the 500 block of E. McLemore St. reported hearing a heated argument followed by a single gunshot emanating from the room DeMya shared with her boyfriend.
When police arrived at the South Memphis residence, they discovered a harrowing scene.
DeMya was found on the floor with a gunshot wound to her neck. Miraculously, her 2-year-old daughter, who had been lying on a nearby bed, was physically unharmed. DeMya was rushed to a nearby hospital, but her injuries proved fatal, and she was pronounced dead a short time later.
The investigation into the young woman's death quickly focused on her 24-year-old boyfriend, Torian Williams. A week after the shooting, he was arrested and charged in connection with her death. In December 2021, a Shelby County Grand Jury handed down an indictment against Williams for second-degree murder. He was subsequently held on a $100,000 bond. The case was assigned to the District Attorney's Domestic Violence Unit, which is responsible for prosecuting cases involving homicide and assault committed by intimate partners.
