In the Frayser neighborhood of Memphis, Tennessee, a dispute between two women on October 5, 2021, escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 24-year-old Amise Gales. The altercation, which took place at the Ridgecrest Apartments on Rangeline Road, turned violent, prompting Gales to intervene on behalf of his girlfriend.
As the fight intensified, another man, Jaydevin Benson, emerged from a nearby apartment and opened fire on Gales. Gales, who was also armed, returned fire but was struck in the chest during the exchange. Tragically, a one-year-old baby and the child's grandmother were nearby when the shooting erupted.
Attempting to flee the scene, the wounded Gales managed to get into his car but crashed into the apartment complex's gate and then a tree. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The incident led to a swift police investigation and the eventual arrest of the alleged shooter.
In February 2022, a Shelby County Grand Jury indicted 25-year-old Jaydevin Benson in connection with the death of Amise Gales. Benson faces serious charges, including second-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, and employment of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony. He was subsequently held on a $250,000 bond. The case is being handled by the Shelby County District Attorney's Office.
