In the small community of Tiptonville, Tennessee, the life of 57-year-old Jerry Wade Yates, a White male, was brought to a tragic and violent end on December 21, 2021. Known as the co-owner of Yates & Sons Tile and Culvert, he was a familiar face and an avid collector of cars and trucks. His sudden death stemmed from a double shooting that unfolded at his residence on Cherry Street, an event that would deeply impact his family and the local community.
The investigation into the shooting
was a collaborative effort between the Tiptonville Police Department and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Their work led them to identify a suspect, 49-year-old Willie L. Gates Jr. Following the investigation, a warrant was issued for Gates's arrest on a multitude of serious charges. These included first-degree murder, felony murder, attempted first-degree murder, and especially aggravated kidnapping. The charges further extended to especially aggravated burglary, employing a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and unlawful possession of a weapon by a convicted felon.
The search for Gates concluded in Memphis, where he was apprehended by the Shelby County Fugitive Apprehension Team and subsequently booked into the Shelby County Jail. The case took another turn when investigators uncovered evidence of witness intimidation. This led to the arrests of the suspect's wife, Tara L. Gates, and her daughter, Cassheus U. Giles. They faced charges of threatening and intimidating a witness in an attempt to persuade them to provide a false statement to the authorities. Tara Gates was charged with aggravated assault, coercion of a witness, criminal conspiracy, and filing a false report, while Giles was charged with coercion of a witness, criminal conspiracy, and two counts of filing a false report.
