On a cold December morning in 2007, the city of Minneapolis was shaken by a double homicide that claimed the life of 27-year-old Arie Musse Jama, a Black male from St. Paul. His body was discovered in an alley, the victim of gunshot wounds to the chest and neck. Not far from where Jama was found, in the hallway of a south Minneapolis apartment building, lay another victim, 25-year-old Najib A.

Authorities believed the two killings were connected, stemming from an argument that had taken place inside the apartment building. The police stated that the act did not appear to be random, suggesting the victims and their assailant may have known each other. In the immediate aftermath, however, no suspects were publicly identified, and no arrests were made, leaving a cloud of uncertainty and grief over the community. The case, which was logged at the incident location of 3127 Pleasant Avenue, officially remains unsolved.
Within the Somali community, whispers and rumors began to circulate about what might have transpired. Some believed that Najib Omar was the primary target of the violence, possibly due to a dispute with another man over a woman. According to this narrative, the disagreement escalated from words to a physical altercation, with the loser vowing revenge. It has been suggested that Arie Jama, who was a distant relative and friend of Omar, was tragically killed simply to eliminate a witness to the initial crime. Despite these persistent community rumors and the belief that the identity of the killer was widely known, no charges have ever been filed in connection with the murders.
