In a quiet neighborhood in southeast Shelby County, the life of 25-year-old Malik Smith was abruptly ended on the afternoon of Thursday, May 5, 2022. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene, inside a home on Quail Crest Lane, the victim of a fatal shooting. Investigators with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office were called to the residence around noon, where they discovered Smith on the kitchen floor.
The investigation into the homicide quickly pointed to a robbery gone wrong.
Detectives believe the shooting stemmed from a plan to rob Smith, who had allegedly sold marijuana to one of the suspects in the past. This tragic encounter escalated, leading to the gunfire that claimed Smith's life. The incident left the community shaken and authorities searching for those responsible for the violent act.
Within days, the investigation led to the apprehension of multiple suspects. Three men were taken into custody in connection with the murder. Phillip Jones, 34, and Jeremiah Chalmers, 26, were initially arrested, and their charges were later upgraded to first-degree murder. A third suspect, 30-year-old Jarrod Kenard Macklin Vaughn, was also arrested and faced charges of first-degree murder. All three men were also charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, as well as various drug and gun offenses. Authorities also indicated that a fourth individual was believed to be involved in the crime, though it was not immediately clear if an arrest had been made.
