In the summer of 2022, the community of Greeneville, Tennessee, was shaken by the tragic death of Melissa Kay McMurray, a 48-year-old female. On the afternoon of Wednesday, June 15, 2022, McMurray was fatally shot in the parking lot of Midway Construction Company, where she had been a dedicated office manager for 19 years. The incident prompted a swift response from the Greeneville Police Department, who found her suffering from gunshot wounds.
She was quickly transported to Greeneville Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The investigation into McMurray's death soon took a dark turn, revealing a murder-suicide scenario. The man responsible for her death was identified as 51-year-old Richard Eugene Davenport. Shortly after the shooting in Greeneville, Davenport contacted the Washington County Sheriff's Department, informing them that he was armed in the parking lot of the Justice Center in Jonesborough. As deputies approached him, Davenport tragically took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital a short time later.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation described McMurray and Davenport as acquaintances but did not release a motive for the violent acts. Those who knew Melissa McMurray remember her as a loving and caring person who cherished her son, friends, and family. A U.S. Navy veteran, she was known for her willingness to help anyone in need and had a big heart. Her sudden and violent death left a void in the lives of those who knew and loved her.
