In the summer of 1902, a popular dance at a farm known as Heslep's Grove in Donora, Pennsylvania, took a tragic turn, ending the life of an off-duty police officer. Clarence Lawrence Eaton, a 28-year-old male officer with the Donora Borough Police Department, was at the dance with his wife on the evening of Saturday, August 16th.
A fight broke out among several young men and juveniles at the gathering.
Eaton stepped in to break up the altercation, successfully calming the situation for a short time. However, the conflict reignited. The 24-year-old brother of one of the juveniles involved in the initial dispute ran to the scene and, without warning, shot Officer Eaton with a. 38 caliber handgun. The wound proved to be fatal, and Eaton died at the scene. He was survived by his wife.
The man who fired the fatal shot was promptly arrested and charged with the murder of Officer Eaton. Following a trial, he was convicted of second-degree murder and received a sentence of 15 years in prison. He was eventually released from prison and died in 1914.
