Joseph, accompanied by Father William Benonis, was making the short walk from St. Michael's Church to the rectory after a church bingo game. Father Benonis carried a case containing the evening's proceeds, while Joseph held a tin box with funds from refreshment sales. Awaiting Joseph's return was his devoted wife, standing near the rectory, anticipating the conclusion of their routine evening.
As they neared their destination, two men approached them with malicious intent. One assailant brandished a shotgun, pressing it into Father Benonis's stomach. In the ensuing chaos, Father Benonis attempted to defuse the situation by discarding the money case into nearby hedges. The confrontation escalated rapidly. As one of the attackers fled, the other, wielding the shotgun, turned his attention to Joseph. In a senseless act of violence, the assailant fired at close range, striking Joseph in the left chest and shoulder. The assailant then fled the scene, leaving Joseph gravely wounded. Father Benonis and Mrs. Hoffman rushed to his side, but despite their immediate efforts, Joseph showed no signs of life when authorities arrived moments later. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation that followed was thorough. Witnesses reported seeing three African American males fleeing the scene, one carrying a rifle-like object. They were observed entering a late 1960s model Cadillac with a white top and temporary tags, which was later found abandoned nearby. Inside, police discovered a temporary registration slip bearing the name John W. Davis Jr. Further forensic analysis revealed Davis's fingerprints on both the vehicle and the recovered shotgun, which ballistic tests confirmed as the murder weapon.
On January 14, 1980, John W. Davis Jr. surrendered to authorities. During questioning, he became emotional, expressing remorse and implicating accomplices named Brown, Bannister, and Slim Lee. He claimed that Brown had provided the gun, assuring him it wasn't loaded, and that his accomplices had abandoned him during the botched robbery. Davis was subsequently convicted of first-degree murder, two counts of robbery, and criminal conspiracy, resulting in a life sentence.
