Dr. Ernest Trout, a 67-year-old male physician from Springfield, PA, tragically died on October 30, 1985, as a result of gunshot wounds sustained during a shooting rampage at the Springfield Mall. The incident occurred when Sylvia Seegrist, a 25-year-old woman diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, opened fire on shoppers with a semiautomatic rifle. Dr. Trout, who was a gynecologist at Delaware County Memorial Hospital, was one of nine people shot during the attack. He sustained bullet wounds to the head, abdomen, and buttocks, and remained in a coma for a month before succumbing to his injuries.
Sylvia Seegrist was arrested at the scene and charged with murder, weapons violations, and related offenses. She was found guilty but insane and sentenced to three consecutive life sentences for the deaths of the victims, including Dr. Trout, and seven consecutive 10-year terms for the wounded victims. Seegrist was committed to Mayview State Hospital for treatment.
