In the summer of 1993, the discovery of a body in a wooded area of Chester, Pennsylvania, marked the beginning of a long-unanswered case. On June 30, 32-year-old Thomas Byrd was found deceased near the 400 block of East 22nd Street. An autopsy would later reveal that the African American man had been the victim of a violent crime, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. His death was officially ruled a homicide.
