Corporal Joseph Raymond Pokorny Jr., aged 45, was a dedicated member of the Pennsylvania State Police, having served for over 22 years. On the night of December 12, 2005, Corporal Pokorny was fatally shot during a traffic stop near an exit ramp from I-376 in Carnegie, Pennsylvania. The incident occurred shortly after 2:00 a.m., when Pokorny attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding.
A violent struggle ensued, during which the suspect managed to gain control of Pokorny's service weapon and shot him in the neck and chest. The fatal shot entered an area around his armpit, which was not protected by his vest.
The suspect, identified as Leslie Mollett, had been on parole for less than a month at the time of the incident. After the shooting, Mollett fled the scene but was later taken into custody by law enforcement. He was officially charged with Corporal Pokorny's murder two days later. On October 24, 2007, Mollett was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Corporal Pokorny was survived by his son, daughter, and parents. His death was a significant loss to the community and the Pennsylvania State Police, and he was honored with a memorial service attended by thousands of law enforcement officers from across the state. In recognition of his service, a section of I-279 was dedicated as the Corporal Joseph Raymond Pokorny Jr. Memorial Highway on May 3, 2007.
