While inside his marked USPS vehicle at the intersection of Columbia and Suburban avenues, Vignone was ambushed. A van blocked his path, and a man emerged, firing multiple shots into the mail truck. Vignone was struck several times, including a fatal wound to the head, and was pronounced dead at the scene, still in his postal uniform. The quiet street was suddenly a crime scene, with investigators finding a firearm and seven spent shell casings in a nearby yard. The incident left neighbors heartbroken and shocked by the brutal and unexpected violence.
Shortly after the shooting, a 53-year-old man named Eric M. Kortz walked into the Carnegie Borough Police Department. He informed the secretary that he had shot someone and wanted to turn himself in.
