In the early hours of Sunday, May 10, 2015, the life of Abdiaziz Salah Farah, a 27-year-old African-American man from Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, was tragically cut short. Just before 2 a.m., Minneapolis police responded to reports of gunfire in the Whittier neighborhood, near the intersection of Pillsbury Avenue South and West Lake Street. Arriving at the scene, officers discovered Farah's body on the street. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, and authorities pronounced him dead at the location. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office would later officially rule his death a homicide.
Friends and acquaintances described Farah as a well-liked individual who worked as a truck driver. He was a husband and a father to a 2-year-old daughter. His family had reportedly just returned from a trip to Nairobi, Kenya, days before the fatal shooting. The incident occurred near the bustling Karmel Square, a prominent Somali shopping center, where Farah was known by many. The sudden violence left a community in mourning and searching for answers.

Police officials stated that they did not believe the shooting was a random act of violence. Preliminary information suggested that a confrontation between two groups had occurred at the location, which escalated when at least one individual began shooting.
