In the summer of 2009, the life of 17-year-old David Austin Carr was tragically cut short in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. A student at Dauphin County Technical School with a passion for diesel technology, David was also a dedicated soccer player since 2001 and an associate at a local Giant Food Store. He was known by friends and family as a wonderful son, brother, and uncle who enjoyed fishing, football, and basketball.
The events leading to his death began with a dispute over a marijuana transaction. David and a friend had arranged to buy a half-pound of marijuana from Michael Holston. However, the quantity they received was short, and David intended to get his money back from Holston for the discrepancy. Friends had advised him against pursuing the matter.
On August 8, 2009, David drove to the 1900 block of North Street to confront Holston. After waiting in his vehicle for some time, he got out and walked towards Holston's address. Witnesses observed the two talking, and what began as a conversation escalated into a fatal encounter. A witness overheard arguing, followed by the sound of running.
David was chased down an alley where he was shot multiple times in the head in what the coroner described as an 'execution-style' killing. An autopsy later confirmed that he had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head. The violent nature of his death sent shockwaves through the community.
The investigation quickly led to 20-year-old Michael Holston, who was arrested and charged with the murder. During the subsequent trial, a jury found Holston guilty of first-degree murder. He was immediately sentenced to life in prison for the death of David Austin Carr. The legal proceedings brought a measure of closure to a case that began with a disagreement and ended in a senseless loss of a young life.
