In the spring of 2013, a burst of gunfire shattered the afternoon calm in a Chester, Pennsylvania neighborhood, leaving a young man dead and an elderly woman seriously wounded. The incident unfolded around 1:30 p.m. on April 17, 2013, near the intersection of 22nd and Crozer Streets. Twenty-one-year-old Demetrius L. Jones, known to his loved ones as 'Buddy,' was shot in the head during what police described as an exchange of gunfire.
He was rushed to Crozer-Chester Medical Center, but succumbed to his injuries later that evening. Jones was a Black male.
The violence of that afternoon also reached inside a nearby home, where an 82-year-old woman, Edith Hardy, was watching television in her living room. A stray bullet pierced through her window and struck her in the neck. She was transported to the same medical center in critical condition. The seemingly random and tragic injury to an elderly woman in the perceived safety of her own home added another layer of shock and sorrow to the day's events.
Within a day of the shooting, law enforcement identified a suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest. Naim T. Williams, who was 18 years old at the time, was charged with murder, aggravated assault, and illegal possession of a weapon. According to court documents, Williams' mother told police that her son claimed Jones had pulled a gun on him first, causing him to duck and return fire. When she told her son that a woman had also been shot, he reportedly expressed remorse, saying, 'If I did that, I didn't mean to.'
The shooting that claimed the life of Demetrius Jones and gravely injured Edith Hardy was part of a spate of violence that troubled the city of Chester that week. On the same day, two other men were injured in separate shootings across the city, although police did not immediately confirm if the incidents were related. The death of Jones contributed to a rising number of homicides in the city, heightening community concerns about gun violence.
