Danny Steele, a 36-year-old male of African American ethnicity, was fatally shot on December 7, 2013, in York, Pennsylvania. Steele was killed inside his vehicle at the intersection of North George and North streets around 2:55 a.m. The shooting was not connected to the neighborhood, and it was later revealed that Steele had been targeted due to his past actions.
In 1997, Steele had testified against his childhood friends, Melvin "Fatback" Bethune and Tysheem "Ty Boogie" Crocker, in a murder trial for the gang-related killing of Raymond "Skip" Clarke. As part of a deal with the York County District Attorney's Office, Steele pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and received a prison sentence of 2.5 to 5 years. Bethune and Crocker were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
On the night of his death, Steele was approached by Tobias Bethune-Banks, the son of Melvin Bethune, who demanded that Steele recant his testimony. Steele refused, and Bethune-Banks, along with two other unidentified individuals, followed Steele and shot him multiple times in his car. Bethune-Banks was later arrested and charged with criminal homicide.
In 2019, a York County jury acquitted Bethune-Banks of first- and third-degree murder charges. The jury found that the evidence presented by the prosecution was insufficient to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Bethune-Banks was responsible for Steele's death. Despite the acquittal, Bethune-Banks remained in state prison for a separate felony drug charge.
The case highlighted the complexities and challenges of prosecuting cases involving gang violence and past testimonies. Steele's death underscored the dangers faced by individuals who cooperate with law enforcement in gang-related cases.
