In the first week of a new year in Philadelphia, the life of 22-year-old LeQuan Green was tragically cut short. On the night of January 4, 2014, the young African American man was on a front porch in the Olney neighborhood when he was fatally shot in the head. His death marked another violent end to a young life in the city, a story that would ripple out with further devastating consequences.
The shock of Green's murder deeply affected his childhood friends, Basir Amaker and Karon
Bailey, both 24 years old. The three had grown up together, maintaining a close bond as they navigated the path to adulthood. Heartbroken by the loss, Amaker and Bailey made their way to a memorial for Green on Felton Street in West Philadelphia on the evening of January 5th. They went to pay their respects and mourn the sudden loss of their friend, joining a crowd of nearly 200 people.
After the memorial, as Amaker, Bailey, and another friend were sitting in their car, gunfire erupted. Both Amaker and Bailey were killed in the ambush, and their friend was wounded. The sudden and brutal violence that had claimed LeQuan Green's life had, in a tragic turn of events, also taken the lives of his two friends who had come to honor his memory.
In the aftermath of these connected tragedies, the Philadelphia police were left with a daunting investigation. Despite the large number of people in the vicinity of the shooting that claimed the lives of Amaker and Bailey, no witnesses came forward with information about the gunmen.
