In the early hours of a June morning in 2014, a surprise birthday party in Montoursville, Pennsylvania, took a tragic turn, ending the life of 24-year-old Cody Gorsline. A guest at the celebration for his best friend, Derek Gair, Gorsline, a male, died from a single gunshot wound to the head. The incident occurred at Gair's residence on Weldon Street, where a gathering of about a dozen people had convened for what was meant to be a joyous occasion.
As the party wound down, Gorsline and
Gair went upstairs to a bedroom. There, Gair decided to show Gorsline a. 38-caliber revolver that he kept in a gun safe. Accounts from the ensuing investigation revealed that Gair opened the safe, took out the loaded handgun, and showed it to Gorsline. In the moments that followed, as the firearm was being handed over, it discharged. Gair reported that he had turned his back for a moment when he heard the shot and found Gorsline on the floor, bleeding from a head wound. It was Gair's wife who frantically called 911, initially reporting that Gorsline had shot himself. Both men had reportedly consumed alcohol during the party.
Rushed to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Cody Gorsline succumbed to his injuries, passing away on either late Monday night, June 15th, or sometime on Tuesday, June 16, 2014. State police launched an investigation into the shooting, treating the matter with serious consideration. An early point of uncertainty in the investigation was the question of who exactly fired the weapon. Investigators noted that the nature of the bullet's entry wound suggested that the shot could have been fired by either Gorsline or Gair during the exchange of the handgun.
