In the summer of 2014, a violent altercation in Hanover, Pennsylvania, led to the tragic death of 20-year-old Shawn Steven Jarvis. The incident, which unfolded in the evening hours of June 27th in the town's Center Square, cut short the life of the young male. What began as a dispute quickly escalated to a fatal encounter that would forever alter the lives of two families.

On that Friday night, a fight broke out between Jarvis and another man, 24-year-old Colin Hafer of Harrisburg. During the course of the physical struggle, Hafer produced a semi-automatic handgun and shot Jarvis. The sound of the gunshot drew immediate attention, and citizens in the area quickly flagged down a nearby police officer. Hafer was promptly taken into custody at the scene of the crime.

Tragically, despite the rapid response, Shawn Jarvis’s injuries proved to be mortal. He was rushed to York Hospital for emergency medical treatment but was pronounced dead by the coroner's office at 9:04 p.m. that same evening. An autopsy was later scheduled to officially determine the cause of death. The investigation into the shooting continued, with law enforcement appealing to the public for any additional information regarding the events that transpired.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Colin Hafer was charged with one count of criminal homicide. He later admitted to shooting Jarvis during the altercation. In November of 2014, Hafer appeared in York County Court and pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. As a result of his guilty plea, he faced a sentence of 5 to 10 years in state prison. The resolution of the case in the court system brought a measure of closure to the tragic and untimely death of Shawn Jarvis.
