James Gerard Becker III, a 17-year-old male student at CAPA High School in Philadelphia, PA, tragically died on March 5, 2015. Becker was shot in the midsection by his friend, 17-year-old Ivan Oberholtzer, while they were playing with a gun at Becker's home in the Kensington section of Philadelphia. The incident occurred on a day when both boys were home from school due to a snowstorm.
Despite efforts to save him, Becker succumbed to his injuries at Hahnemann University Hospital.
Oberholtzer claimed he found the gun in the street and thought it was unloaded when he took the clip out, but there was still a bullet in the chamber. Even though the shooting appeared to be an accident, Oberholtzer was charged as an adult with murder. He was held without bail pending further legal proceedings.
The case drew significant attention due to the tragic circumstances and the fact that the victim and the suspect were close friends and classmates. Becker's family and friends have since commemorated his memory and tried to cope with the loss.
